Cyclone Yasi
I know the floods reached international news, but I don't know if yous have heard that now, Queensland is about to get hit by a category 5 cyclone? I can't give you specifics, but if anyone wants to read more you can follow local Australian national news on Cyclone Yasi at the ABC News website: [link]
And from the Bureau of Meteorology, here's a map: [link] (let me know if the links don't work, they may change).
From what I'm hearing on the TV, QLD has never seen a cyclone of such magnitude.
Localised Fires
Yesterday I went to my first "big" fire. It was a grass fire, you might be able to see it here of this map: [link] (this map updates regularly, so it may not exist on this map in the near future). If you click a blue flame triangle between "Armidale", "Gunnedah" and "Tamworth" you will get a brief synopsis of the fire. There were at least a dozen fire trucks, and then there were the command vehicles, council water tankers, 2 aircraft water bombers and other vehicles. The fire affected a farming area, so we were doing property protection and attacking flames directly to stop it spreading. Thankfully, the wind wasn't very breezy (it was bad enough without it).
1001Critiques Contest Winners!
Now for some good news! (The fire counts as bad news).
#1001Critiques recently held their first contest, and I promised features for the winners while my sub lasted. The contest in a nut shell was to produce as many quality comments and critiques as one could in the time frame; the people with the most would win (the comments had to be quality, as mentioned, to count). So without futher adue, may I introduce the top 3 place holders:

Congratulations everyone!

I admire your courage! I bet your adrenaline level went sky high during the intervention. I know I couldn't do what you're doing, I'm scared of fire and even cigarette smoke chokes me.
Thank you; it's my little way of helping society, though that isn't the only reason I became a volunteer.
I was with a good crew, I trusted them and I'd trained with them, so that made it much more easier for me - team effort really means and does alot in situations like that
Good job dealing with the fire. I bet that's scary!
And thank you
Yeah, I bet it was pretty crazy. I respect that you are putting your life on the line to help people!
I'm not sure I'd say my life was on the line, though it can be a hazardous occupation; so thanks all the same!
It definitely is hazardous, and it's brave of you to try to help people! ^_^
