Doing Beast Wars requests

Tue Jan 17, 2012, 12:33 AM
As the title says I'm doing Transformers: Beast Wars requests; specifically, original characters. You don't need to know me, you just need to have a BW original character (not Beast Machines) - I really feel like drawing BW stuff, and I want to try some less familiar characters and try out some new techniques for my colouring. Please read on if you are interested.

What I intent to do:
:bulletorange: Full beast mode AND robot mode in the one picture
:bulletorange: Backgrounds will vary

Please keep in mind the following:
:bulletorange: I reserve the right to not draw a character. I have no idea how many (if any) people will respond to this offer. If I get very few, more chances are I will be able to do everyones. Others might take more time as I go back to university.
:bulletorange: If you ask for a request, I consider that you are obviously giving me permission to draw your OC (in a non-offensive manner)

Perhaps most important to point out:

I am not the greatest artist, I am doing this as an exercise to improve while doing art I currently feel inspired to do. Artworks may vary in quality as I experiment, so if you want a Da Vinci go and pay someone - if my standards and experimenting is okay by you, then I'd be extremely happy to do some art of your characters! :ahoy:

:bulletred:Still interested? Send me a note containing the following::bulletred:
:bulletorange: A single reference image of robot mode OR a written physical description; I would prefer it if your written description was limited to their appearance and a a couple of sentences of their personality (so I know what kind of character I'm drawing). I really don't want their life story, it takes me forever to read otherwise.
:bulletorange: You don't need a reference for beast mode if it is a normal animal. Fuzors and transmetals I would appreciate either a single reference image for beast mode or a written physical description.
Note: For written descriptions, expect me to be more creative when iterpreting your character. I will do my best however to match your description.

And that's it, yes. :iconmegatronyesplz:

Hi there! I would like to take you up on your offer... but with a twist. See, I'm running an art contest right now and it involves drawing by Beast Wars OC Moonhunter (amongst other things). I would love if you could enter! That way you have a chance of me paying you back somehow for the picture. The contest is here: [link]

Sure, and okay, I'll try and enter (if I don't make the deadline, I'll still work on the piece). I saved some of the pictures of Moonhunter from your favorites as character references, but do you have a reference made by you, be it drawn or written? (in a story is okay too, if you have a story that provides a physical desctiption in it). If I could have an original reference, so I know what was or wasn't artistic license, that would be great; even if it's just a couple of sentences so I know what to work off.

This is the closest I have to something I worked on myself: [link] I can't draw, which is why I hired Andy Griffith to make his original reference for me. In "Fire With Fire" he has this design:

"Gone was the old blue and yellow color scheme. Green and white would suit his needs. His sleek alternate mode reminiscent of the sports cars of Earth was forgotten for something more durable, more suited for the hostile terrains terrorists and murderers liked to hide in: something tank-like, mounted on four independent leg-like treads. On the top he mounted a cannon-something to allow him to fight no matter what mode he was in. On a whim, he affixed a mechanical canine-like head to the front, symbolic of the lone wolf he was molding himself into. Despite the durability he aimed for in the design, he did not go overboard with the armor, preferring dexterity over bulk. His new design still retained a few influences from his Terran heritage, but not enough to betray where he had come from. As the design stage finalized, the computer automatically asked him if he wanted to affix a Maximal or Autobot symbol anywhere on his new body. He told it no."

Thank you for both of those references; to make sure I've got this right, the Moonhunter reference by Andy Griffith is the most accurate to go from? Also, having had no time to read your stories (my apologies, I just grossly underestimated time I'd have to be on the internet and draw etc this semester), the written reference is of a mode after Moonhunter's wolf beast mode I assume? It's very good for general character, style and gives me a better idea of what Moonhunter is all about (that can often make drawing a character so much easier).

Hope your having a good year so far! :D

The design by Andy Griffith is his most "iconic" body. Throughout his various designs, his helmet has always stayed mostly the same. And he always has pistols on his shins, no matter what body he's in.

The description is the form he took before taking on a beast mode. If you don't want to come up with a new design for him based on a description, using the preexisting pictures of him will suffice. :)

If doing a new design is okay, I'm quite happy to do that (keeping the stuff that is important or notable of course). I just assume everyone has a specific expectation of their characters looks, to make sure I don't go stepping on toes by being too liberal with artistic license. But I think I get the jist now, so all good, sorry if I spent way too much time going over the finer details in this discussion :D

It's all fine. I look forward to seeing someone's interpretation.

If you have the time, I recommend at least reading the final third of the story I linked you to. It'll probably make it easier to illustrate the character if you're familiar with his personality. :)

I may have to prepare a Beast Wars OC (or two...? If that's ok) for you. I think I'm going to download the whole of Beast Wars and re-watch them...

That's okay, you just let me know when you've got them thought up (if you make more than one I'll draw them all for you, but I'll do your "main" character first).

You know if I was still in Melbourne that task would be much easier coz I could just lend them to you (Beast Wars DVDs) :evileye:. If you can't find beast wars I could always lend you mine (I could post them, I'd just have to check how much registered/insured post would cost). I have seasons 1+2 on DVD and could burn season 3 as data files.

Rewatching is a good idea though, if we intend to start up a RP (the one I am yet to properly reply about :slow: ).

Nah, I've found a good torrent so it shouldn't be too hard, might just take a while, but thanks for the offer!

I'll probably have them sent in a note tomorrow, I need to call it a day XD
