I recently got Autodesk Maya on my laptop and am learning to make 3D models etc. It's like the jump I made from MS Paint to Paintshop Pro/Photoshop 8 years ago so don't expect anything terribly AWESOME in upcommign uploads... there may be, for example, a hairy doughnut or something lol. Anything 3D i uplaod this year will probably be horrible experiments (possibly failed eperiments).

I'm also slowly making my first 100 theme challenge entry; it's somewhat large, so I do small bits time to time.

Writing wise, well, you can expect Beast Wars fan fics and possibly original fantast or sci-fi stories or continuations of what i've already got up.

Mind you I'm back at university now and I've got even more classes this semester and plenty of homework and assessments already waiting for me to start so all these things, as much as I want to waste my life doing them (the art projects) I doubt I'll actually have much time for them.

For those wondering I completed my 3 subjects last semester, and am picking up the maths I was supposed to do last semester; if this semester goes well, I'll continue the bachelor. If not, then I'll get a job.

Tiz a fun program, do you know if there is much difference between it and other 3D programs? (with buttons, menus, functions and stuff). I was just curious C:

the only other full-fledged 3d software i'm familiar with is 3d studio max.
it's a pretty close relative to maya.

I'll have to look it up on the internet and see what this 3D Studio Max has to offer

W00t! Maya is the god of 3D modelling programs AFAIK  How is its learning curve?

Math? OMG :fear: Why do they torture everyone with math? :P Like 2-5% of the people will actually use it in their lives.

That's especially good to hear comming from you, who uses 3D stuff all the time. I think I will learn a moderate level of functions in about as much time as it took me to learn photoshop as well as I know it now (so 2-3 years), UVs and building models with multpiple parts are difficult right now but I'm having fun with my gear lol. I'm not even gonna tough on animation til I am well and truly into the modelling side of things.

Do you use Maya for your 3D stuff, or something else? (or a combination of programs?).

Lol, unfortunately, Math is a core subject for all engineers. So I have to do good at maths or I'm doomed . But surprisingly it has more applications than I ever realised in school; I wish we could just download it into our brains.

I use Poser (and a lot of Photoshop afterwards) which isn't an actual 3D program (you can't make 3D models from scratch there) but a hobbyist tool which operates in 3D. I haven't used any 3D modelling programs and I don't think I'd be able to learn any as I have no freehand drawing skills, nor sculpting skills.
Combining Maya, Photoshop and ZBrush (which I sometimes use to enhance 3D geometries) would be a killer combination, if you'd ever want to learn another program then ZBrush would be the perfect "bridge" between the other two IMO ;) It's very extensive and people can do wonders with it. It has a horrible interface and learning curve, though, this is why I only use like 1% of what it's made for :P

Opps sorry, goes to show how little I know about 3D stuff (I do vaguely recall now though you mentioning Poser to me a while ago). Thanks for the elaborate description, I am looking into zBrush since you recommended it, and I think I'm gonna try it out; sounds like it will indeed be very useful! I think you'd be able to learn the basics of Maya in no time; drawing skills are not that essential, not like in photoshop. I want to try out poser as well lol but I better get my head around these other programs first.
